Piles of rubbish mounting outside homes are a result of the EU landfill directive, it was claimed today.

UK Independence Party candidate Dr K T Rajan said that the health of people in Britain was being affected by targets set by the EU to reduce dependency on landfill sites.

There is growing scientific evidence to suggest that dangerous organisms such as listeria, E. coli and a bug linked to the C. diff hospital killer could flourish if waste bins are only collected fortnightly.

The legislation has hit Britain harder than other nations because we use landfill sites more than any other country in Europe.

Dr Rajan, UK Independence Party candidate in Ealing Southall, who worked in the NHS for 28 years, said "People are being exposed to potentially deadly levels of bacteria because rubbish is being left to mount up, instead of being collected.

"Council Tax has doubled in the last ten years, and yet something as simple and necessary as refuse collection is being sidelined.

"There is no proof that these bin collections encourage recycling; I think that is just spin by the government to cover up that they are failing residents by not standing up to the EU on this important issue."

By 2010, every ton of waste over tough euro targets will incur a £150 fine, which has meant councils have switched to fortnightly collections.

Dr Rajan added, "People need to realise that the EU is not just about passports and bendy bananas; it affects every aspect of their daily lives, including their bins and their council tax."
